i don't have any tried and true methods for the whole "brain to pencil" thing. I think EVERY artist has issues with that translation process.

What i'd try is to work out the basics first and THEN add the details as a secondary thing. Sometimes if i'm trying to get a design out and i wanna try different things, i'll draw a plain figure in the appropriate build, duplicate it digitally, print it, and then draw on the plain figures. Then you're not worrying about build or anatomy, just what the character will look like.
